Where does food substance occur in digestion?

Food substances are broken down and digested in various parts of the digestive system. The process begins in the mouth, where food is chewed and mixed with saliva to start breaking down carbohydrates. From there, the food travels to the stomach, where it is further broken down by stomach acid and enzymes.

Next, the partially digested food moves to the small intestine, where most of the digestion and absorption of nutrients takes place. Enzymes from the pancreas and bile from the liver help break down proteins, fats, and carbohydrates into smaller molecules that can be absorbed by the body.

Finally, any remaining waste products move to the large intestine, where water is absorbed and the remaining waste is formed into feces for elimination from the body.
