The crime of apartheid is a term used to describe the systematic and institutionalized discrimination and segregation of people based on their race or ethnicity. It is considered a crime under international law and is defined in the International Convention on the Suppression and Punishment of the Crime of Apartheid as "inhuman acts committed for the purpose of establishing and maintaining domination by one racial group of persons over any other racial group of persons and systematically oppressing them." The term originated in South Africa, where the apartheid system was in place from 1948 to 1994, but it can also be applied to similar systems of discrimination and segregation in other countries.
