What are sedimentary rocks?

Sedimentary rocks are types of rocks that are formed by the accumulation and compression of sediments over time. These sediments can include particles of minerals, rocks, and organic materials that are deposited by water, wind, or ice. Over time, these sediments are compacted and cemented together to form solid rock. Sedimentary rocks can be classified into three main types: clastic, chemical, and organic. Examples of sedimentary rocks include sandstone, limestone, and shale.

Sedimentary rocks are formed from the accumulation and lithification (hardening) of sediments. Sediments are fragments of pre-existing rocks, minerals, or organic matter that have been transported by wind, water, or ice and deposited in layers. As sediment accumulates, the weight of overlying layers compresses and cements the underlying layers, forming sedimentary rocks.
