Training and Development: Effectiveness in the Solomon Islands Christian Association
Introduction
Training and development (T&D) plays a crucial role in enhancing the performance and growth of organizations, including religious associations like the Solomon Islands Christian Association (SICA). By equipping employees with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to perform their jobs effectively, T&D can improve productivity, boost morale, and foster a culture of continuous learning. This study aims to examine the effectiveness of training and development programs within SICA and provide recommendations for further improvement.
Background of SICA
SICA is a non-profit organization that represents over 80% of Christians in Solomon Islands (SICA, 2021). It is committed to promoting Christian values, fostering unity among churches, and providing leadership in various aspects of community development. SICA recognizes the importance of training and development for its staff and members.
Methodology
This study employed a mixed-methods approach, combining qualitative and quantitative data collection methods. Data were collected through surveys, interviews, and a review of SICA's training records. Surveys were distributed to 50 SICA staff members, and interviews were conducted with six key stakeholders, including the General Secretary, Training Coordinator, and representatives from member churches.
Findings
Program Design and Delivery
SICA's training programs are primarily designed and delivered by the Training Department. The department identifies training needs based on an annual assessment and develops customized programs tailored to the specific requirements of staff and members. The programs are delivered through various methods, including face-to-face workshops, online courses, and on-the-job training.
Participant Satisfaction
Survey results indicated that overall, participants were highly satisfied with the training programs they attended. They reported an increase in their knowledge, skills, and confidence levels. Feedback also highlighted the relevance of the programs to their roles and the effectiveness of the delivery methods.
Impact on Performance
Interviewees and survey respondents provided evidence of positive impacts of training and development on performance. Staff members reported improved work efficiency, enhanced decision-making abilities, and increased motivation to perform their duties effectively.
Areas for Improvement
While SICA's training and development programs are generally effective, there are areas for improvement identified through the study:
- Needs Assessment: Strengthen the process for identifying training needs and ensuring that programs are aligned with organizational and individual goals.
- Program Evaluation: Implement a robust evaluation system to track the impact of training programs and make necessary adjustments.
- Resource Allocation: Increase investment in training and development activities to cater to the growing needs of staff and members.
- Collaboration: Explore partnerships with external organizations to access expertise and resources for specialized training programs.
Conclusion
Training and development are essential components of SICA's mission and vision. The programs currently offered are effective in enhancing staff and member performance and contribute to the overall growth and development of SICA. The recommendations identified in this study provide a roadmap for further improvement and optimization of T&D initiatives. By continuously investing in training and development, SICA can empower its workforce and strengthen its role as a leading Christian association in Solomon Islands.
