It helps in understanding and producing different utterances and sentences by allowing us to comprehend the relationships between words and their arrangement in a sentence. For example, knowing the syntactic rules of a language helps us understand that "The cat chased the mouse" means the cat is doing the chasing, while "The mouse chased the cat" means the mouse is doing the chasing. Syntactic competence also helps us to produce different sentences by arranging words in a grammatically correct manner.

iii) Semantic competence refers to the ability to understand and produce the meaning of words, phrases, and sentences in a language. For example, semantic competence helps us understand that the word "dog" refers to a domesticated animal, while the word "cat" refers to a different domesticated animal. Semantic competence also helps us to produce different sentences by using words and phrases that accurately convey our intended meaning.
