Free morphemes are morphemes that can stand alone as words and carry meaning on their own. They are not dependent on other morphemes to convey meaning. For example, in the word "cat," both "cat" and "cat" are free morphemes.

Bound morphemes, on the other hand, are morphemes that cannot stand alone as words and must be attached to other morphemes to convey meaning. They are dependent on other morphemes to form words. For example, in the word "unhappy," "un-" and "-y" are bound morphemes that must be attached to other morphemes to form a complete word.
