In chemistry, an element is a pure substance that consists of only one type of atom. Elements are the building blocks of all matter and cannot be broken down into simpler substances by chemical means. Each element is represented by a unique symbol, typically one or two letters, and is organized on the periodic table based on its atomic number, electron configuration, and chemical properties.

Elements are classified into different categories based on their properties, such as metals, nonmetals, and metalloids. Metals are typically shiny, malleable, and good conductors of heat and electricity. Nonmetals are typically dull, brittle, and poor conductors of heat and electricity. Metalloids have properties that are intermediate between metals and nonmetals.

There are currently 118 known elements, with the first 94 occurring naturally on Earth and the rest being synthetic elements created in laboratories. Each element has its own unique set of physical and chemical properties, such as melting point, boiling point, density, and reactivity. Elements can combine with each other to form compounds through chemical reactions, creating an infinite variety of substances in the universe.
