Empathy consists of three distinct components:

1. Cognitive empathy: the ability to understand and take on the perspective of another person, to see things from their point of view.

2. Emotional empathy: the ability to feel and share the emotions of another person, to connect with their feelings on a deep level.

3. Compassionate empathy: the motivation to help and support others in need, to take action to alleviate their suffering or improve their situation.
