Introduction
This report presents the findings of a 14-week internship in the teaching practice program at Vane E.P Primary School. The focus of the internship was on researching reading difficulties among learners. The purpose of the research was to identify the factors contributing to reading difficulties and to develop strategies to support learners in overcoming these challenges. The internship provided valuable insights into the teaching and learning process, as well as the importance of early intervention in addressing reading difficulties.
Background
Reading is a fundamental skill that is essential for academic success and lifelong learning. However, many learners struggle with reading difficulties, which can have a significant impact on their overall academic performance. Research has shown that reading difficulties can be caused by a variety of factors, including language barriers, learning disabilities, and lack of access to resources. It is important for educators to understand these factors and to develop effective strategies to support learners in overcoming reading difficulties.
Methodology
The research was conducted through a combination of observation, interviews, and data analysis. The researcher observed classroom activities and interactions to gain insights into the reading abilities of learners. Interviews were conducted with teachers, parents, and learners to gather information about the factors contributing to reading difficulties. Data analysis was used to identify patterns and trends in the data, and to develop recommendations for supporting learners with reading difficulties.
Findings
The research findings revealed several factors contributing to reading difficulties among learners at Vane E.P Primary School. These included:
1. Language barriers: Many learners at the school come from non-English speaking backgrounds, which can make it difficult for them to understand and engage with English language texts.
2. Learning disabilities: Some learners have been diagnosed with learning disabilities, such as dyslexia, which can impact their reading abilities.
3. Lack of resources: The school has limited resources, such as books and reading materials, which can hinder learners' ability to practice and improve their reading skills.
4. Lack of parental support: Some learners do not receive adequate support at home to develop their reading skills, which can impact their progress in school.
Recommendations
Based on the research findings, several recommendations were developed to support learners with reading difficulties at Vane E.P Primary School. These include:
1. Providing targeted support for learners with language barriers, such as English language classes and bilingual resources.
2. Implementing interventions for learners with learning disabilities, such as specialized reading programs and individualized support.
3. Increasing access to resources, such as books and reading materials, to encourage regular reading practice.
4. Engaging parents in their children's reading development through workshops and resources to support reading at home.
Conclusion
The internship at Vane E.P Primary School provided valuable insights into the challenges faced by learners with reading difficulties. The research conducted during the internship highlighted the importance of early intervention and targeted support in addressing reading difficulties. By implementing the recommendations developed through the research, educators at the school can better support learners in developing their reading skills and achieving academic success. The internship experience has been invaluable in deepening my understanding of the teaching and learning process, and I look forward to applying the knowledge gained in my future teaching practice.
