- Word cards with homophones, homonyms, antonyms, and synonyms

Procedure:
1. Introduction (5 minutes)
- Begin by reviewing the concept of syllables.
- Explain that homophones, homonyms, antonyms, and synonyms are all related to words and their meanings.
2. Homophones (10 minutes)
- Write the word "hear" on the board.
- Ask students to say the word aloud.
- Then, write the word "here" next to it.
- Explain that "hear" and "here" are homophones because they sound the same but have different meanings and spellings.
- Give students more examples of homophones, such as:
- "pair" and "pear"
- "right" and "write"
- "bat" and "bath"
3. Homonyms (10 minutes)
- Write the word "bat" on the board.
- Ask students to explain the different meanings of the word "bat."
- Explain that homonyms are words that are spelled and pronounced the same but have different meanings.
- Give students more examples of homonyms, such as:
- "bank" (a financial institution) and "bank" (a slope of land)
- "match" (a game) and "match" (a thing that is similar)
- "run" (to move quickly) and "run" (a stream of water)
4. Antonyms (5 minutes)
- Write the word "happy" on the board.
- Ask students to think of a word that means the opposite of "happy."
- Write the word "sad" next to "happy."
- Explain that antonyms are words that have opposite meanings.
- Give students more examples of antonyms, such as:
- "hot" and "cold"
- "big" and "small"
- "up" and "down"
5. Synonyms (5 minutes)
- Write the word "happy" on the board again.
- Ask students to think of a word that means the same thing as "happy."
- Write the word "joyful" next to "happy."
- Explain that synonyms are words that have the same or similar meanings.
- Give students more examples of synonyms, such as:
- "beautiful" and "pretty"
- "kind" and "nice"
- "run" and "jog"
6. Practice (15 minutes)
- Divide students into small groups.
- Give each group a set of word cards with homophones, homonyms, antonyms, and synonyms.
- Have students sort the word cards into categories.
- Check students' work as they go.
7. Assessment (5 minutes)
- Call on students to give examples of each type of word: homophone, homonym, antonym, and synonym.
- Use the students' answers to assess their understanding of the concepts.
Differentiation:
- For struggling students, provide more examples and support during practice.
- For advanced students, challenge them to come up with their own examples of homophones, homonyms, antonyms, and synonyms.
