Why is the corpus luteum removed during the second trimester?

The corpus luteum is not typically removed during the second trimester of pregnancy. In fact, the corpus luteum plays a crucial role in maintaining the early stages of pregnancy by producing progesterone, which is essential for supporting the growth and development of the fetus.

However, in some cases, a condition known as corpus luteum cyst may develop during pregnancy. This cyst can cause pain and discomfort for the mother and may need to be surgically removed if it becomes too large or causes complications. This procedure is typically done in the first trimester, not the second trimester.

The corpus luteum is not removed during the second trimester. It degenerates naturally around 10-12 weeks of pregnancy, when the placenta takes over the production of progesterone.
