Why every year Bangladesh face flood? Is it due to minimise the depth of rivers?

Bangladesh faces floods every year due to a combination of natural and human factors. The country is located in the delta region of three major rivers (Ganges, Brahmaputra, and Meghna), which makes it prone to flooding. The annual monsoon rains, coupled with the melting snow from the Himalayas, cause these rivers to swell and overflow their banks, leading to widespread flooding.

Additionally, Bangladesh has a flat topography, with about 80% of its land area being less than 12 meters above sea level. This low-lying geography exacerbates the flooding as there is limited natural drainage capacity, and water tends to accumulate easily.

Human factors also contribute to the severity of floods in Bangladesh. The construction of embankments and dams along the rivers, as well as the encroachment of floodplains for agriculture and settlements, have reduced the natural floodplains and water retention areas. This reduction in the natural capacity to absorb and store excess water increases the vulnerability to flooding.

Climate change is another significant factor. Rising sea levels and increased rainfall intensity due to climate change further worsen the flood situation in Bangladesh.

Therefore, while the depth of rivers plays a role in flooding, it is just one of many factors contributing to the annual floods in Bangladesh. The country's geographical location, flat topography, human interventions, and climate change all contribute to the recurring flood events.
