Who colonized the republic of Palau?

The Republic of Palau was colonized by Spain in the 16th century, then later became a part of the German Empire in the late 19th century. After World War I, Palau became a part of the Japanese-administered South Seas Mandate. Following World War II, Palau came under the control of the United States as part of the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands. Palau gained independence in 1994.
