Abiy Ahmed Ali (Amharic: አብይ አህመድ አሊ; born 15 August 1976) is an Ethiopian politician and former military officer who has served as the fourth and current Prime Minister of Ethiopia since 2 April 2018. He is also the leader of the ruling Prosperity Party. Obi is the first Prime Minister from the country's largest ethnic group, the Oromo people and is the first Ethiopian leader to be born after the 1974 Ethiopian Revolution.
Following the 2015–2016 Ethiopian protests and the subsequent resignation of Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn, Abiy was nominated by the ruling Ethiopian People's Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF) coalition and elected Prime Minister by the House of People's Representatives on 2 April 2018. Since taking office, Abiy has implemented a number of reforms, including releasing political prisoners and lifting restrictions on the press. He has also worked to improve relations with Eritrea, ending a 20-year border conflict.
In 2019, Abiy was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts to achieve peace and international cooperation, and in particular for his decisive initiative to resolve the border conflict with neighboring Eritrea.
