What's the structure of IGAD?

The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) is structured as follows:

1. Assembly of Heads of State and Government: This is the highest decision-making body of IGAD, composed of the heads of state and government of member countries.

2. Council of Ministers: This body is composed of the foreign ministers of member countries and is responsible for making policy decisions and providing overall guidance to the organization.

3. Committee of Ambassadors: This body is composed of the ambassadors of member countries and is responsible for overseeing the implementation of decisions made by the Council of Ministers.

4. Secretariat: The Secretariat is the administrative arm of IGAD, responsible for coordinating and implementing the organization's activities. It is headed by an Executive Secretary who is appointed by the Assembly of Heads of State and Government.

5. Specialized Technical Committees: IGAD has several specialized technical committees that focus on specific areas such as peace and security, agriculture and environment, and economic cooperation.

6. Member States: IGAD currently has eight member states, including Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, and Uganda. Each member state has a representative in the various decision-making bodies of the organization.

Summit of Heads of State and Government:

- Meets annually to set strategic direction and provide guidance

Council of Ministers:
- Meets twice a year to implement decisions made by the Summit
- Composed of foreign ministers or ministers responsible for regional cooperation

- Specialized committees that address specific areas of cooperation:
- Agriculture and Food Security
- Climate Change and Environment
- Conflict Prevention, Management and Resolution
- Cross-Border Trade and Investment
- Energy
- Health
- Infrastructure
- Education
- Private Sector and Natural Resource Management
- Tourism

Secretariat:
- Headed by the Executive Secretary
- Responsible for coordinating IGAD activities and implementing decisions
- Located in Djibouti City, Djibouti

Specialized Institutions:
- Intergovernmental Authority on Development Climate Prediction and Applications Centre (ICPAC)
- Intergovernmental Authority on Development Security Sector Program (IDDRSS)
- Intergovernmental Authority on Development Centre for Pastoral Areas and Livestock Development (ICPALD)
- Intergovernmental Authority on Development Institute (IGADi)
