Unisa ENG1503 English Portfolio
Purpose:
- To assess students' proficiency in English language and communication skills.
- To provide students with an opportunity to showcase their written and oral language abilities.
Composition:
The portfolio consists of four components:
Component 1: Reflective Essay
- Students reflect on their personal and academic language journey, identifying their strengths, areas for improvement, and goals for future development.
Component 2: Essay
- Students select a topic related to the study of English and write an academic essay demonstrating their critical thinking, research, and writing skills.
Component 3: Creative Writing
- Students demonstrate their creativity and imagination by writing a short story, poem, or screenplay.
Component 4: Oral Presentation
- Students prepare and deliver a 10-minute oral presentation on a topic of their choice related to English studies.
Submission Requirements:
- Reflective Essay: 1,000-1,200 words
- Essay: 1,500-2,000 words
- Creative Writing: 1,200-1,500 words or equivalent
- Oral Presentation: 10 minutes (excluding Q&A)
Assessment Criteria:
The portfolio is assessed on the following criteria:
- Language skills: Grammar, vocabulary, sentence structure, coherence, clarity
- Critical thinking: Analysis, synthesis, interpretation, argumentation
- Research skills: Identification, evaluation, integration of sources
- Creativity: Originality, imagination, style
- Presentation skills: Delivery, organization, visual aids
Grading:
The portfolio is graded according to the following scale:
- 80-100%: Distinction
- 70-79%: Merit
- 60-69%: Pass
- Below 60%: Fail
