Cementum is a specialized calcified substance that covers the roots of teeth. Its main function is to anchor the tooth securely in the jawbone by attaching the tooth's roots to the surrounding bone and ligaments through the periodontal ligament. Cementum also helps protect the sensitive dentin underneath and provides a smooth surface for the attachment of the periodontal ligament fibers.
