What is nationalism?

Nationalism is a political ideology and movement that emphasizes the interests, culture, and identity of a particular nation or group of people. It promotes the idea that the nation is the central organizing principle of society and that loyalty and devotion to one's nation should be prioritized over other loyalties, such as to a religion, ethnicity, or class. Nationalism often involves a sense of pride and attachment to one's country, as well as a desire for self-determination and independence. It can manifest in various forms, ranging from cultural nationalism that focuses on preserving and promoting a nation's language, traditions, and heritage, to political nationalism that seeks to establish or maintain a sovereign nation-state. However, nationalism can also lead to exclusionary and divisive tendencies, as it can foster a sense of superiority over other nations and can be used to justify discrimination or aggression towards minority groups.
