What is Ceylon?

Ceylon is the former name of the island nation of Sri Lanka. It was known as Ceylon during the period of British colonial rule, from 1815 to 1948. The name was officially changed to Sri Lanka when the country gained independence from British rule in 1948.

Ceylon refers to two entities:

1. Historical Ceylon

- Former British Colony: Ceylon was the former British colony that is now known as Sri Lanka. It was renamed Sri Lanka in 1972.

- Ancient Name of Sri Lanka: Historically, the island of Sri Lanka was known by various names, including Ceylon.

2. Modern Ceylon

- Programming Language: Ceylon is a modern programming language created by Red Hat. It is designed to be statically typed, concurrent, and modular.

Distinction:

It is important to distinguish between the historical and modern usages of the term "Ceylon." In modern usage, it almost exclusively refers to the programming language.
