What is an allophone ?

An allophone is a variant of a phoneme (a unit of sound in a language) that does not change the meaning of a word when it is pronounced differently. Allophones are different ways that a phoneme can be realized in different contexts or environments within a language. For example, the "p" sound in the English words "pin" and "spin" are allophones of the same phoneme /p/.
