What happens During the refractory period?

During the refractory period, the neuron is unable to generate another action potential. This is because the voltage-gated sodium channels are inactivated and unable to open, preventing the influx of sodium ions that is necessary for depolarization and the generation of an action potential. This period allows the neuron to reset and recover before it can generate another action potential.
