What causes HIV/AIDS?

HIV/AIDS is caused by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). The virus is transmitted through contact with infected bodily fluids, such as blood, semen, vaginal fluids, and breast milk. This can occur through unprotected sexual intercourse, sharing needles or syringes, or from mother to child during pregnancy, childbirth, or breastfeeding.

HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) causes AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome). HIV is a virus that weakens a person's immune system by destroying important white blood cells called CD4 cells. CD4 cells help the body fight off infections. When the immune system is weakened, people are more likely to get sick from other infections and diseases. HIV is spread through contact with infected body fluids, such as semen, vaginal fluid, rectal fluid, and blood. It can also be spread through sharing needles or other drug paraphernalia. HIV is not spread through casual contact, such as hugging, shaking hands, or sharing food or water.
