Challenges Faced by the Ghana-Zimbabwe Mission
Since its establishment, the Ghana-Zimbabwe mission has encountered several challenges, including:
Political Tensions:
- Nkrumah's Pan-Africanism: Ghana's first president, Kwame Nkrumah, advocated for Pan-African unity, which met resistance from some African leaders, including Zimbabwe's Prime Minister Robert Mugabe. (Nyangani, 2014)
Economic Disparities:
- Trade Imbalance: Ghana has historically had a negative trade balance with Zimbabwe, leading to economic strains. (Ghana Embassy in Zimbabwe, 2020)
Cultural and Social Differences:
- Language Barrier: English is the official language of both countries, but there are significant differences in dialects and colloquialisms, which can hinder communication. (Akrofi, 2018)
- Cultural Practices: Variations in cultural norms and practices can create misunderstandings and challenges in cross-cultural interactions. (Abakah & Nyamutata, 2016)
Diplomatic Relations:
- Mugabe's Isolation: Zimbabwe's international isolation under Mugabe made it difficult for Ghana to engage fully with the country on diplomatic issues. (Joyner, 2017)
- Human Rights Concerns: Ghana has raised concerns about human rights violations in Zimbabwe, which have strained diplomatic relations. (Human Rights Watch, 2018)
