Types of Possessive Pronouns
1. Determinative Possessives
- Indicate ownership before a noun
- Show which noun belongs to a specific person or thing
- Ex: my, your, his, her, its, our, their
Examples:
- This is my book.
- I like your new haircut.
- That is his car.
- She lost her keys.
- The dog wagged its tail.
2. Independent Possessives
- Stand alone as nouns or modifiers
- Replace a noun phrase and indicate ownership
- Ex: mine, yours, his, hers, ours, theirs
Examples:
- This book is mine.
- That haircut is yours.
- The keys are hers.
- The car is theirs.
3. Reflexive Possessives
- Used with reflexive pronouns (myself, yourself, himself, etc.)
- Emphasize ownership or identity
- Ex: my own, your own, his own, her own, our own, their own
Examples:
- I built this house myself.
- You need to do it yourself.
- The dog is afraid of its own shadow.
- We did the project our own way.
4. Double Possessives
- A combination of a determinative and independent possessive
- Emphasizes ownership
- Ex: my own, your own, his own, her own, our own, their own
Examples:
- This is my own book.
- I'm proud of my own work.
- The children built their own fort.
5. Indefinite Possessives
- Indicate ownership but not by a specific person or thing
- Ex: whose, somebody's, nobody's
Examples:
- Whose book is this?
- I found somebody's wallet.
- The store is closed, so nobody's home.
