1. Pre-moult stage: In this stage, the insect prepares for moulting by secreting enzymes that soften the old exoskeleton. The insect may also stop eating and become less active as it prepares for the moulting process.
2. Moulting stage: During this stage, the insect sheds its old exoskeleton through a process called ecdysis. The insect will typically find a safe and secluded spot to moult, as it is vulnerable to predators during this time. The new exoskeleton is already formed underneath the old one, and the insect will emerge from its old exoskeleton, leaving behind a soft, pliable new exoskeleton.
3. Post-moult stage: After moulting, the insect's new exoskeleton will harden and darken over the course of a few hours to a few days, depending on the species. The insect will also consume its old exoskeleton to recycle nutrients and minerals. During this stage, the insect may be more vulnerable to predators until its new exoskeleton fully hardens.
