The objective of this commercial assessment is to evaluate the viability and sustainability of coffee farming as a livelihood option for smallholder farmers in Gallima village, Alata Cuko District, Sidama Regional State, Ethiopia. The assessment will focus on analyzing various aspects of coffee farming, including market demand, production costs, profitability, and potential challenges faced by smallholder farmers in the region.
Specifically, the assessment will aim to:
1. Assess the market demand for coffee: Analyze the local, regional, and international market demand for coffee, including trends, consumer preferences, and potential buyers for coffee produced in Gallima village.
2. Evaluate production costs: Determine the costs involved in coffee farming, including land preparation, seedlings, fertilizers, labor, and other inputs. Assess the affordability and availability of these inputs for smallholder farmers in the region.
3. Analyze profitability: Calculate the potential income and profitability of coffee farming for smallholder farmers in Gallima village. Consider factors such as yield per hectare, market prices, and production costs to determine the financial viability of coffee farming as a livelihood option.
4. Identify potential challenges: Identify and analyze the potential challenges faced by smallholder farmers in coffee farming, such as climate change, pests and diseases, lack of access to credit, and limited market access. Assess the impact of these challenges on the sustainability of coffee farming in the region.
5. Provide recommendations: Based on the findings of the assessment, provide recommendations and strategies to enhance the sustainability and profitability of coffee farming for smallholder farmers in Gallima village. This may include suggestions for improving productivity, accessing markets, strengthening farmer cooperatives, and addressing challenges faced by farmers.
