The story of the Prodigal Son is a parable told by Jesus in the Bible, found in the book of Luke, chapter 15, verses 11-32.
The story begins with a man who has two sons. The younger son asks his father for his share of the inheritance, which the father gives him. The younger son then goes off to a distant country and squanders his inheritance on wild living. He soon finds himself in poverty and desperation, working as a hired hand feeding pigs.
One day, the younger son comes to his senses and decides to return to his father, confessing his sins and asking for forgiveness. When he arrives home, his father sees him from a distance and runs to greet him with open arms. The father is overjoyed to have his son back and throws a lavish feast to celebrate his return.
The older son, who has stayed loyal to his father and worked hard on the family farm, is resentful of the attention and forgiveness shown to his wayward brother. But the father reminds him that they should rejoice because the lost son has been found and is now back home.
The parable of the Prodigal Son teaches us about the unconditional love and forgiveness of God. It shows that no matter how far we may stray or how many mistakes we make, we can always come back to God and find forgiveness and redemption. It also reminds us to show compassion and forgiveness to others, just as God has shown to us.
