Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
Sierra Leone's Position
1. No Poverty
- Extreme poverty has reduced, but over half of the population still lives below the poverty line.
- Weak social protection systems and high unemployment remain challenges.
2. Zero Hunger
- Food insecurity persists, with over 40% of the population undernourished.
- Agriculture is hampered by poor infrastructure, lack of mechanization, and climate change.
3. Good Health and Well-being
- Access to healthcare is limited, with high mortality rates from preventable diseases.
- Maternal and child health outcomes are poor, and malnutrition is a major concern.
4. Quality Education
- School enrollment rates have improved, but quality remains low.
- Teacher shortages, inadequate infrastructure, and limited access to higher education are challenges.
5. Gender Equality
- Gender inequality persists in all sectors, with women facing discrimination in education, employment, and decision-making.
- Sexual and gender-based violence is also a significant issue.
6. Clean Water and Sanitation
- Access to safe water and sanitation remains low, especially in rural areas.
- Water pollution and sanitation-related diseases are common.
7. Affordable and Clean Energy
- Energy access is limited, with only a small percentage of the population having electricity.
- The reliance on biomass fuels contributes to deforestation and air pollution.
8. Decent Work and Economic Growth
- Unemployment and underemployment are high, especially among youth.
- The economy is dominated by agriculture and mining, with limited diversification.
9. Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure
- Industrial development is limited, and infrastructure is inadequate.
- Corruption and poor governance hinder investment and economic growth.
10. Reduced Inequalities
- Income inequality is high, with a small elite controlling a large share of wealth.
- Regional disparities and social exclusion are also significant challenges.
11. Sustainable Cities and Communities
- Urban areas are growing rapidly, but infrastructure and services are struggling to keep pace.
- Sanitation, waste management, and air pollution are major concerns.
12. Responsible Consumption and Production
- Consumption patterns are unsustainable, with high levels of waste and resource depletion.
- Deforestation and land degradation are significant environmental challenges.
13. Climate Action
- Sierra Leone is highly vulnerable to climate change, facing extreme weather events and sea-level rise.
- Mitigation and adaptation measures are inadequate, and climate resilience is a priority.
14. Life Below Water
- Marine resources are threatened by overfishing, pollution, and climate change.
- Sustainable fishing practices and marine conservation are important.
15. Life on Land
- Deforestation, land degradation, and wildlife loss are major concerns.
- Conservation efforts are focused on protecting biodiversity and restoring degraded ecosystems.
16. Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions
- Corruption and weak governance undermine development efforts.
- Human rights, rule of law, and access to justice need strengthening.
17. Partnerships for the Goals
- Sierra Leone relies heavily on international assistance to achieve the SDGs.
- Partnerships with donors, civil society organizations, and the private sector are crucial.
