Protective services refer to a range of interventions and support mechanisms provided by government agencies or non-profit organizations to safeguard vulnerable individuals from harm, abuse, or neglect (National Association of Social Workers, 2021). These services are designed to protect the rights and well-being of individuals who may be unable to care for themselves due to age, disability, or other factors that impair their ability to live independently. Examples of protective services include child protective services, adult protective services, and services for victims of domestic violence or human trafficking.
Government institutions play a crucial role in providing protective services. Child protective services, for instance, are typically administered by state or county agencies responsible for investigating reports of child abuse or neglect and taking appropriate action to protect the child's safety and well-being (U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, n.d.). Adult protective services, on the other hand, are often provided by local or state agencies and focus on protecting vulnerable adults from abuse, neglect, or exploitation (National Institute on Aging, n.d.). These services may involve assessing the individual's situation, providing support and resources, or intervening to prevent further harm.
In addition to government agencies, non-profit organizations also play a vital role in providing protective services. These organizations often work in partnership with government agencies to offer a range of services, such as emergency shelter, crisis intervention, counseling, and legal assistance (National Network to End Domestic Violence, n.d.). By working together, government institutions and non-profit organizations can provide a comprehensive system of protective services to help vulnerable individuals live safely and with dignity.
