If pregnancy does occur what happened to the corpus luteum ?

If pregnancy occurs, the corpus luteum continues to function and produce progesterone to support the early stages of pregnancy. The corpus luteum is essential for maintaining the uterine lining and supporting the developing embryo until the placenta is fully formed and able to take over hormone production. If pregnancy does not occur, the corpus luteum will degenerate and turn into a structure called the corpus albicans, leading to a drop in progesterone levels and the start of a new menstrual cycle.
