Literature Review:
There are several factors that have been identified in the literature as contributing to poor academic performance among students. These factors can be broadly categorized into individual, family, school, and community-level factors.
Individual factors such as low motivation, lack of study skills, poor time management, and mental health issues have been found to negatively impact academic performance. Family factors such as low socioeconomic status, lack of parental involvement, and family stress can also contribute to poor academic outcomes. School factors such as inadequate resources, ineffective teaching methods, and high student-teacher ratios have been shown to affect student performance. Lastly, community-level factors such as neighborhood violence, lack of access to educational resources, and limited extracurricular opportunities can also impact academic success.
Research Plan:
The proposed research will aim to investigate the factors contributing to poor academic performance among high school students in a specific urban school district. The research will utilize a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative surveys with qualitative interviews to gather data on individual, family, school, and community-level factors that may be influencing student performance.
The research will involve administering a survey to a sample of high school students to assess their academic performance, motivation, study habits, and mental health. Additionally, interviews will be conducted with a subset of students, parents, teachers, and community members to gather more in-depth information on the factors contributing to poor academic performance.
The data collected will be analyzed using statistical methods to identify correlations between different factors and academic performance. Qualitative data from interviews will be analyzed thematically to provide a deeper understanding of the experiences and perspectives of the participants.
Research Budget:
The proposed research will require funding for survey administration, data analysis software, interview transcription services, and compensation for participants. The estimated budget for the research is as follows:
- Survey administration: $2,000
- Data analysis software: $500
- Interview transcription services: $1,000
- Participant compensation: $1,500
Total budget: $5,000
The research team will consist of a principal investigator, research assistants, and graduate students who will be responsible for data collection, analysis, and reporting. The research findings will be disseminated through academic publications and presentations to inform educational policy and practice.
