Public librarians play a vital role in their communities by providing access to information, resources, and programs. Their responsibilities typically include:
Collection Development and Management:
- Selecting and acquiring books, electronic resources, and other materials to meet the informational, educational, and recreational needs of the community
- Organizing and maintaining the library collection for easy access and retrieval
- Developing and implementing collection development policies to ensure a balanced and diverse collection
Public Services:
- Providing reference and research assistance to patrons in person, by phone, or online
- Registering new patrons and issuing library cards
