Research Proposal Title: Yield Performance of Advanta Adv 2308w Rice Variety in Nyatike Sub-County, Kenya
Research Question:
What is the yield performance of Advanta Adv 2308w rice variety compared to the commonly grown varieties in Nyatike Sub-County, Kenya?
Introduction:
Rice is a staple food for over half of the world's population. In Kenya, rice is the second most important cereal crop after maize. Nyatike Sub-County is a rice-growing area in western Kenya, but rice yields are low due to various factors, including the use of low-yielding varieties.
Advanta Adv 2308w is a new rice variety that has shown promise in other parts of Kenya. It is a high-yielding variety with a short growth duration and good resistance to diseases and pests.
Literature Review:
- Yield Performance of Advanta Adv 2308w in Kenya: Studies conducted in other parts of Kenya have shown that Advanta Adv 2308w has a higher yield potential than the commonly grown varieties. For example, a study conducted in Mwea Irrigation Scheme found that Advanta Adv 2308w yielded 9.2 tons/ha, compared to 7.5 tons/ha for the local variety.
- Factors Affecting Rice Yield: Rice yield is affected by a number of factors, including variety, soil fertility, water availability, and pest and disease pressure. In Nyatike Sub-County, low soil fertility and inadequate water supply are major constraints to rice production.
- Agronomic Practices for High Rice Yield: To achieve high rice yields, it is important to adopt good agronomic practices, such as proper land preparation, timely planting, and adequate fertilizer application.
Research Hypothesis:
The yield performance of Advanta Adv 2308w rice variety is higher than that of the commonly grown varieties in Nyatike Sub-County, Kenya.
Research Objectives:
- To determine the yield performance of Advanta Adv 2308w rice variety in Nyatike Sub-County, Kenya.
- To compare the yield performance of Advanta Adv 2308w with the commonly grown varieties in Nyatike Sub-County, Kenya.
- To identify the agronomic practices that contribute to high rice yields in Nyatike Sub-County, Kenya.
Methodology:
- Experimental Design: The study will use a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications. Each plot will be 5m x 5m, and each variety will be planted in 10 plots.
- Treatments: The treatments will be four rice varieties: Advanta Adv 2308w, Basmati 370, Pishori, and IR 64.
- Data Collection: Data will be collected on the following parameters:
- Plant height
- Number of tillers per plant
- Number of panicles per plant
- Grain yield (kg/ha)
- Data Analysis: The data will be analyzed using ANOVA, and the means will be separated using the LSD test.
Expected Outcomes:
The study is expected to provide the following outcomes:
- Information on the yield performance of Advanta Adv 2308w rice variety in Nyatike Sub-County, Kenya.
- A comparison of the yield performance of Advanta Adv 2308w with the commonly grown varieties in Nyatike Sub-County, Kenya.
- Recommendations on the agronomic practices that contribute to high rice yields in Nyatike Sub-County, Kenya.
Significance of the Study:
The findings of this study will be useful to rice farmers in Nyatike Sub-County, Kenya. The information on the yield performance of Advanta Adv 2308w will help farmers make informed decisions about which variety to grow. The recommendations on agronomic practices will help farmers improve their rice yields.
