Title: Exploring Elements and Principles of Design
Grade Level: 6-8
Objective: Students will be able to identify and explain the elements and principles of design in various works of art.
Materials:
- Examples of artwork that demonstrate different elements and principles of design (e.g. balance, contrast, line, shape, color, texture, etc.)
- Paper
- Pencils
- Markers
- Rulers
- Scissors
- Glue
Procedure:
1. Introduction (10 minutes):
- Begin the lesson by discussing the importance of elements and principles of design in art. Explain that these concepts are the building blocks of creating visually appealing and effective artwork.
- Show examples of artwork that demonstrate different elements and principles of design. Ask students to identify and discuss what they see in each piece.
2. Elements of Design (20 minutes):
- Introduce the seven elements of design: line, shape, form, color, value, texture, and space. Define each element and provide examples of how they are used in art.
- Have students create a chart or visual representation of the elements of design, including examples of each.
3. Principles of Design (20 minutes):
- Introduce the principles of design: balance, contrast, emphasis, movement, pattern, rhythm, and unity. Define each principle and provide examples of how they are used in art.
- Have students create a chart or visual representation of the principles of design, including examples of each.
4. Application (30 minutes):
- Divide students into small groups and provide them with a selection of art supplies.
- Assign each group a specific element or principle of design and have them create a piece of artwork that demonstrates that concept.
- Encourage students to be creative and experiment with different techniques and materials.
5. Reflection (10 minutes):
- Have each group present their artwork to the class and explain how they incorporated the assigned element or principle of design.
- Lead a discussion on the importance of elements and principles of design in creating effective artwork.
6. Assessment:
- Evaluate students based on their participation in class discussions, their understanding of the elements and principles of design, and the creativity and effectiveness of their artwork.
Extension:
- Encourage students to apply their knowledge of elements and principles of design to other subjects, such as graphic design, fashion design, or interior design.
- Have students research and analyze famous works of art to identify how elements and principles of design are used.
