Chapter One: An Invitation
I.
"Sam, you have been invited."
The Deputy Editor turned in his swivel chair and beamed at the Reporter. Chris Oriko, the Reporter, was a lean, lithe, dark young man, with wide-spaced, intelligent and sharply inquiring eyes. These eyes held a fire, a blaze of undeviating curiosity in them. Sam had been only six months on the paper, but his reporting had been consistently brilliant, revealing a keen eye for news and an unusual gift for vivid, gripping prose.
The Deputy Editor, Karega, was powerfully built, with a strong, almost square face and a thick moustache. He could not have contrasted more physically with his young reporter. But they shared one quality: a deep-seated passion for the profession.
"But who invited me?" Chris inquired, "and to where?"
"Why, she said her name is Beatrice, and the place is Nasawa. A place I have never heard of before."
"Nasawa?" Chris repeated the name, a frown creasing his brow. "Is it a village or a town?"
"I don't know. She didn't say. In fact, she didn't say much about it. Just that she wanted you to come, that it was very important."
"How did she know I am a reporter?"
"She didn't. I told her you were."
"Oh." Chris hesitated for a moment, his mind racing. "What should I do?"
Karega shrugged. "Up to you. I'm not going to tell you what to do. But if it was me, I would go."
"Why?"
"Because the woman said it was important. And you know what? There is something about her. I can't put my finger on it but she has this presence. Plus, you are a young man. You should take every opportunity that comes your way."
Chris nodded thoughtfully, his frown gone. "OK, then. I'll go. When?"
"She didn't say."
"Well, if she didn't, it means it's not urgent. I'll wait for her to contact me."
True to his suspicion, the woman, Beatrice, did not contact him for another week. When she finally did, it was a Tuesday, and she sounded a little out of breath.
"Hello?"
"Hello."
"Is that Chris Oriko?"
"Yes. Speaking."
"Chris, it's Beatrice here. I'm sorry, but I've been so busy. I haven't had a chance to get back to you. So, are you still interested in coming to Nasawa?"
"Yes. Very much so," Chris replied. "But when?"
"Any time that is convenient for you. But I would prefer it to be this weekend."
"Is something happening this weekend?"
"No. Nothing special. I just thought it would be a good time for you to visit."
Chris hesitated for a moment. He had promised to take his girlfriend out that weekend, but he could see how important it was to Beatrice that he come. And she had said it was important.
"All right. I can come this weekend."
"Thank you, Chris. I'll send you the address."
"OK."
"Is there anything else?" Beatrice asked.
"One thing. Where is Nasawa?"
"It's in the Western Province," Beatrice said. "Just a small village."
