Esther Chapter 6
On that night the king could not sleep, so he ordered the book of the chronicles, the record of his reign, to be brought in. It was read to the king, and in it was found written how Mordecai had exposed Bigthana and Teresh, two of the king's eunuchs who guarded the threshold, for conspiring to assassinate King Ahasuerus.
"What honor or distinction has been bestowed on Mordecai for this?" the king asked.
"Nothing has been done for him," his attendants answered.
Just then Haman appeared at the outer court of the palace, intending to ask the king for permission to hang Mordecai on the gallows he had prepared for him.
The king said, "Who is in the outer court?"
"It is Haman," his attendants answered.
So Haman went in, and the king asked him, "What should be done for the man the king delights to honor?"
Now Haman thought to himself, "Who else would the king delight to honor but me?"
"For the man the king delights to honor," Haman said, "have them bring a royal robe the king has worn and a horse the king has ridden, with a royal crown on its head. Then let the robe and horse be entrusted to one of the king's most noble princes. Let them robe the man the king delights to honor, and let him be led on the horse through the city, with someone shouting in front of him, 'This is what is done for the man the king delights to honor!'"
"Go at once," the king commanded Haman. "Do just as you have said for Mordecai the Jew, who sits at the king's gate. Do not neglect anything you have proposed."
So Haman took the robe and the horse and robed Mordecai, and led him on the horse through the city, shouting in front of him, "This is what is done for the man the king delights to honor!"
Afterward Mordecai returned to the king's gate. But Haman rushed home, with his head covered in grief and shame. He told his wife Zeresh and all his friends everything that had happened to him.
"My wise men and my wife Zeresh have told me," Haman said, "that if a Jew, Mordecai, whose origins are in reverse, enters my gates, the luck will change for me and for my king. I will be ruined."
